My daily earth vigil
Hi – I’m Satya. I’m a writer and a psychotherapist, and I run the local Buddhist temple Bright Earth with my husband Kaspa. We have two little dogs Aiko and Ralph, and we are grateful to live in this lovely town.
I started my daily vigil on the 1st of November 2020. I will continue to sit for an hour a day until the 31st of October this year, when COP26 starts in Glasgow. I am sitting here in silent meditation because my heart breaks at the carbon being pumped into our atmosphere. I can’t stop thinking about melting icebergs, mass extinctions and habitat loss. I am frightened for my young nieces and the darkness they’ll live through. And, I have a fierce love for this beautiful planet.
I’m not pretending that I live a perfectly ethical life. Like you, I live in a broken system. Maybe also like you, I’m sometimes driven by my greed, hate or fear, and sometimes I’m in denial. I don’t always make good decisions. And, this vigil is one of the small things I’ve chosen to do.
What can you do? Personal change is great – eating less meat, flying less frequently, living more gently on the Earth. But this won’t save us. System change is necessary if we are to have a chance of surviving as a species. Find out more about the climate and ecological emergency, talk about it with your friends and colleagues, and join a group (like Extinction Rebellion) who are campaigning for urgent and massive system change. Together, we have the power to turn things around.
If you want to say hello do catch me at the start or end of my vigil or email me at satya@satyarobyn.com. Read more (including suggestions of big or small things you can do to help) at www.dearearth.co.uk/vigil. Feel free to take a photo of me and share it on social media, and if you’d like to join me, do sit near me or anywhere on the Earth. With love, Satya <3
