I am hedged in by dying
On 6th April 2023 by SatyaDear Earth, I am hedged in by dying.
Some of my loved ones are closer than others to the end. There are clocks in my head, counting down – how long do they have? And what about me? Sometimes the ticking is loud.
You have your own clock, sweet Earth. Your biggest clock is set to 7.59 billion years, more or less – this is when the sun will claim you. Your smaller clocks are connected to species, habitats, diversity, beauty & health. We humans keep fiddling with these ones. We have smashed some of them into pieces. We have turned the hands, and so many are now running fast.
What can we do, encircled as we are? What can we do as suffering plucks at our clothing and slides grit into our hearts?
We can appreciate the blossom as it makes a brief extravagant appearance. We can offer sips of nourishment to each other when we can. We can swish the grief around in our bodies – the fury, the confusion, the despair – and transmute it into wisdom, fellow feeling, tenderness.
We can make pearls.
Dear Earth, thank you for your riches. The dying is always hedged by life.
With love,
Satya <3
